Praggna won. We’re highlighting the players who finished the tournament with just one loss.
Wesely So (third), Aronian (sixth), Caruana (ninth). Caruana’s low placing is something of a surprise, but then, you don’t always have a good day or be in top form. Only So suffered a slip-up against Forrest; Caruana and Aronian lost to the winner.
Caruana–Praggna 0–1. Pragg is a master at winning pawns. But this isn’t great chess. Caruana played 31.Re2, a mundane move, defending the b3 pawn. We see it differently. Black will take the b3 pawn and that will be the end of their campaign. He shouldn’t have exchanged queens, but should have gone on the attack instead. Caruana didn’t do that and lost. And the position was fantastic for an attack. See how we did it. We demonstrate a checkmate involving the sacrifice of the queen.

When a top-class chess player loses with the white pieces, something is amiss. The endgame. Both sides have two pieces each, but White has one more pawn. And they must win. If the opponent carries on playing and, on top of that, wins, it’s a complete sham. Yet this is what happens, because chess has become trivialised. Players are playing for the result, and real, genuine chess is secondary here. In the position we’ve chosen, Black should resign. But Foreest carried on playing and won. What a laugh. Games like this and players like Foreest make a mockery of chess. We have a draw and a straightforward win. We’re showing the draw.

Looking at the variations that the grandmasters did not play – and here we are, of course, referring to those who lost their games – we keep telling ourselves: ‘If only he’d played like that…’ he would be world champion. Looking at our variation of this game here, with Black winning (mate in 36 moves), many of you will get the impression that the Goldchess style of play is extraordinary chess, perhaps even 22nd-century chess, which… you can play today.
